Biographical Sketch

Joseph S. Gillen graduated in 1977 from the University of Pittsburgh, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biophysics & Microbiology. He then became a research assistant in the Cardiovascular-Pulmonary division of the Department of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. In 1979, he became the Technical Director of the Pulmonary Function Laboratory of the VA Medical Center in Philadelphia, PA. After moving to Pittsburgh, PA, in 1985, he became a Systems Analyst for the Pittsburgh NMR Institute. Eventually, he joined the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center as the Research Network Administrator for the MR Research Center in the Department of Radiology. In 1997, Mr. Gillen was recruited to become a Research Associate in the Division of Magnetic Resonance Research in the Department of Radiology at Johns Hopkins University, as well as one of the staff scientists at the F. M. Kirby Center for Functional Brain Imaging, where he currently maintains many of the technological aspects of the center.
